In 1968, the “New Generation” of upscale Mercedes-Benz models, alternatively known as the S-Class, was introduced. These carefully refined five-passenger automobiles continued a tradition of hand-crafted quality and superior engineering, while their formal, classically inspired styling featured the discreet use of chrome to produce what many consider to be a timeless design. As expected, interior appointments were a magnificent combination of leather, wood and chrome. In SE trim, the “E” stood for “Einspritzung” or fuel injection, and horsepower rose to 180. Capable of top speeds of 120 miles per hour, the 280SE utilized a sophisticated, fully independent suspension, resulting in taut, responsive handling that made the 280SE one of the most satisfying Mercedes-Benz models to drive.

This 280SE Cabriolet originally came to us from Southern California, where it remained under stewardship of Mr. Stern since July 1985 – when he purchased the Mercedes-Benz at auction in Austin, Texas with 22,458 recorded miles. Now reading just under 32,000 miles on the odometer, the car retains the large majority of its original components, as the recipient of a series of mechanical services across the last decade or so – recorded in file.

The exterior's paint was refinished in correct Tobacco Brown in years past, while the cabin's original Parchment leather remains fitted, but dyed black several years ago. The carpeting was replaced with black at that time and is now protected by a bespoke 6-piece sisal mat set by Coco Mats, including the trunk. The interior also features a Becker Grand Prix radio, floor shifter and power windows. The 280 retains its Kuhlmeister air conditioning system – however, the compressor and condenser have been removed and accompany the car.

The vehicle's cosmetics have mellowed beautifully into what we consider the ideal “driver's” 280SE. Both engine and luggage compartments appear orderly. This includes the original chassis stamping along the passenger front rail, radiator core support plaque, and original number's-matching engine – verified by Mercedes-Benz Data-Card. Gray vinyl mats (with protective matching Coco mat on top), spare wheel, and jack rest in the trunk. Much of the brightwork, trim, lenses and etched side glass appear original to the vehicle, as are all (x5) 3/68 date coded wheels with 195/75R14 Hankook whitewall tires mounted.

The Cabriolet performs well in a variety of conditions and modern traffic, thanks to upkeep and a 2020 inspection and scheduled service. We offer this honest 280SE Cabriolet for worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
