The Aston Martin DB5 stands as one of the most iconic grand touring cars ever built, representing the pinnacle of Aston Martin's craftsmanship and engineering in the early 1960s. Production of the DB5 was limited to just 1,021 examples between 1963 and 1965, including only 123 Convertibles, of which a mere 39 were built in left-hand drive, making them especially rare and highly collectible.
The featured example, chassis DB5C/1278/L, is one of these scarce cars. Originally finished in Black over Terracotta Connolly leather, it was well-optioned from new with features such as air conditioning, a Powr-Lok differential, and a Blaupunkt radio. Notably, it debuted as a show car at the New York International Auto Show, adding significant historical importance.
In 1976 it was discovered in a Massachusetts barn with just 7,000 miles. It was acquired by Peter J. Sprague, the American businessman credited with rescuing Aston Martin from financial collapse. During his ownership, Sprague upgraded the car with a rare and highly desirable “C-Stage” Vantage engine, featuring triple Weber carburetors and producing 325 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful DB5s of its kind.
The car remained in the Sprague family for decades, eventually passing to his son and receiving consistent care while retaining much of its originality. By the time it was sold in 2020, it showed approximately 65,000 miles and only one repaint in its original color. A subsequent owner commissioned a comprehensive mechanical service and sympathetic restoration by Team CJ Works between 2021 and 2023. This work preserved the car's originality while refreshing key elements, including the interior retrimmed in correct Terracotta leather, and detailing of the engine bay and undercarriage.
Today, this DB5 Convertible stands as an exceptionally rare and well-preserved example, distinguished by its left-hand-drive configuration, show car pedigree, factory-correct specification, and unique provenance tied to Aston Martin leadership. With its blend of originality, careful restoration, and historical significance, it represents one of the most desirable iterations of the legendary DB5.
