Located in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, RUF Automobile GmbH was founded in 1939 by Alois Ruf Sr. as a general service garage. His son, Alois Jr., would develop a passion for Porsches, and upon taking charge of the company in 1974, refocused RUF on enhancing Porsches. In 1981, the German government recognized RUF as an independent automobile manufacturer.

Introduced in 2001, the RUF R Turbo was based on the Porsche 996 Turbo. Starting with a spare, un-numbered body shell, RUF performed visually restrained revisions that also aided aerodynamics and overall performance. The standard Turbo's air intakes were relocated to the top of the rear fenders for the most direct path to the intercoolers. The front bumper was reshaped with integrated cooling slats, while the rear bumper accommodated enlarged air outlets. A rear-mounted, double-decker, rear spoiler was electrically adjustable and provided more downforce than standard. Underpinnings received similar attention including a lowered sports suspension with Bilstein shocks, stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, and upgraded brakes.

The R Turbo's 3.6-liter, twin-turbocharged flat-six received altered KKK turbochargers, sharper camshafts, special intake manifold, modified VarioCam variable valve timing, RUF exhaust system, and a remapped electronic control unit. Developing 520 hp at 6,000 rpm and 545 lbs./ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm – compared with 420 hp and 413 lbs./ft. for the regular 996 Turbo – the new engine propelled the R Turbo to a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, and 214 mph top speed. One year later, RUF released an updated R Turbo delivering 550 hp and 575 lbs./ft. of torque. This example is the even more powerful and finally tuned 590HP limited version as noted by the cars original registration and Porsche Excellence feature. The “550” mentioned on the Certificate is in error.

This distinctive 2004 RUF R Turbo is finished in Azzura Lipari (L7921) – also known as Avus Blue – over a black leather and Alcantara interior with lightweight bucket seats, rear-seat delete, and a discreet RUF integrated roll cage. Featuring a desirable six-speed manual transaxle and all-wheel drive, the first three digits of this example's vehicle identification number – W09 – signify this particular R Turbo was built at RUF's Pfaffenhausen, Germany, factory and is not a conversion. According to German registration documents on file, this US-compliant R Turbo was built for and registered to Alois Ruf Jr., the CEO of RUF Automobile GmbH. In 2005, this car was purchased from RUF by DriverSource who imported it into the US and added it to our private curated collection of Porsche and RUF sports cars. Presenting wonderfully throughout, just 25,840 miles appear on the odometer today.

Offered with books, keys, and documentation, this 996-era R Turbo is a bespoke supercar made by a company with a legacy of engineering some of the most memorable and legendary Porsche-based sports cars. Boasting Alois Jr. provenance, this R Turbo would make a worthy addition to any collection of other RUF-tuned cars or milestone Porsches.
